I wonder if liberty of press can/should be measured on grounds of a questionnary and counting the number of injured/dead journalists...

maybe i was wrong when wondering about freedom of press(or the lack of it) while assisting a young journalist and his ideas working for a newspaper i have long considered to be outspoken and liberal.(...)of course all these personal experiences may be dated back 3 years (that is before last year 'messy autumn')thus they may not be totally true today...but as far as i could see, were you not one of the old-wise-guy you could not write about all you wanted...even if your topic was great up-to-date and revolutionary..in case your bosses considered the topic 'too touchy' or 'risky' they gently explained that you cannot possibily write about such a thing for it would 'harm the reputation of the paper'...and since less and less people read newspapers (at least here)they cannot risk to lose readers.

of course this doesnt mean that there is no freedom at all...you can write about anything that doesnt clash with the rules of the market.

...

another thought in my mind connected to 'freedom of speech' is connected to the experience of a young sociologyst trying to interview an old sportman who has escaped in 1956(revolution) and did not come back(i wonder why...:)for over 30 years. well, guess what..our poor(inexperienced) sociologist made the mistake of letting the old sportsman's wife sit in the very same room while trying to conduct the (life-span)interview with the guy...=> what came out was a constant war between the old guy and his wife..a lady over 80, who 18after the change of regime is still terrified and has been constantly warning his husband that he cannot talk about the past, otherwise they'll get in big trouble.
...this made me wonder how many years will still have to pass before people who read/watch/follow/create the media (let it me newspapers, radio or telelvision) will FEEL FREE to open their mouth's and just express what they think.
but i guess the 'Riporters without Borders' dont have a ready-made questionnary for that.
